Triplex 80-acre Wisconsin compound built for off-the-grid lifestyles with its own wells and wind generator hits market for $1.1M after being constructed ‘by doomsday preppers for doomsday preppers’

  • The property is for sale for $1.1 million, complete with two wells and a shooting range
  • The 80-acre, three-home complex is close to the Wisconsin border
  • It was built decades ago when people believed the world would end

It’s not every day that a doomsday prepper’s safe house comes on the market, but for $1.1 million, buyers can scoop up a Wisconsin complex fit to withstand any apocalypse.

The 80-hectare estate contains three three-bedroom houses spread over 5,300 square metres, built into the earth with thick stone walls and disguised with grass roofs.

Built in the 1990s by Y2K preparers, the homes come complete with essential survival amenities, including a diesel generator, an apple orchard and two wells.

The Zillow listing reads: “Built by preppers for preppers, there are backup valves, gauges and many other features “just in case.”

Photos of the complex show the vast tract of land, filled with trees for timber, and room for a small livestock farm and a shooting range.

The compound was built “by preppers, for preppers” in Wisconsin, near Lake Superior

The current owner of the compound, Jonathan Allen told USA TODAY: “If there were people around, (or) old enough to remember the millennium scare, I think (the families) were just very strategic and smart.”

He said the previous owners were “self-sufficient.”

The property is the ‘ultimate in preparation’ with two wells, a machine shop, a shooting range and a separate building that used to house a diesel generator.

The roof of the main building is covered with grass and built into the hillside, making it well camouflaged and insulated.

Allen says the house is not currently fortified, but it is built with thick, durable concrete set into the side of the hill, making it defensible.

He said, “I don’t know if anything like that still exists.”

In addition to the natural defenses, the site has many lookout points where you can inspect anyone who approaches, and a shooting range.

The house is close to the Wisconsin-Minnesota border, near Lake Superior.

It is located in a very remote forest and at the end of a dead end road, so there is no through traffic.

Allen told USA Today that it would be a great fit for someone willing to go off-the-grid.

He said: ‘It’s clearly connected – it makes a lot of sense now, given the way some people are thinking about the current state we’re in.

“The way it’s built and constructed, it would probably cater to so-called ‘preppers’ today.”

The home listing on Zillow says the homes are a “safe place to get away from it all.”

It reads: ‘This truly unique underground home was built to stand the test of time with a stone and mortar exterior, a living roof atop a newer rubber roof laid over Spancrete and pre-stressed hollow core ceiling panels for ultimate strength and sustainability.

‘The walls and interior structure are a mixture of poured concrete in high load areas and concrete blocks in other areas to create storage areas and interior walls.

‘The heat is provided by a combination of propane-wood boilers.’

It goes on to say: ‘There is a large generator house which is now empty and a large tower for the old wind generator.

‘The 80 hectares of private land is amazing with apple trees, a frontage on the Little Amnicon River, the original quarry where the stone came from, a shooting range from 25 to 300 meters and over 5 hectares of cleared land that would be perfect for gardening or enjoying of the views.

“There is no other building like this, and if you had to build it today it would cost you millions.”
