Tourist found dead by cleaner at apartment hotel in popular holiday destination that attracts large numbers of British tourists

  • The man is said to have suffered head injuries from a blow or fall and was found dead around 12.30 pm on Monday.

A tourist has been found dead in a hotel by a cleaner in a holiday destination known for attracting large numbers of British holidaymakers.

He has been described in conflicting local reports as an Irish or British holidaymaker.

Police said last night they could not confirm his nationality because a judge had imposed a confidentiality order on the case to protect the ongoing investigation, preventing officials from going into detail about the investigation.

The apartment building where he was found dead at around 12.30pm on Monday has been named as the Colina Mar complex in the Puerto Rico resort town of Mogan municipality in the south of the island.

A Civil Guard source said last night: ‘There were signs of violence but the autopsy results are still pending.’

A cleaning lady raised the alarm after discovering the lifeless man’s body when she tried to enter the apartment on Monday.

A male friend with whom he is believed to have traveled to the island was also in the room when police arrived.

He is said to have been ‘completely disorientated’, amid unconfirmed claims that he may have been under the influence of drugs.

The dead man was described as a 33-year-old Irishman by one respected local newspaper and as British by another.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, despite paramedics’ attempts to revive him.

The island’s Civil Guard said last night that the secrecy order imposed on the case by a judge meant they could not make any official comment, and that this included providing information about the man’s nationality.

The possibility that he could have died in an accident has not been ruled out, although initial reports indicate that his death may have been related to crime.
