Casey City Council neighbourhood stoush erupts as garbo is accused of ‘deliberately’ ramming kids’ basketball hoop – and the homeowner is threatened with a fine

A frustrated mother has criticized her council for issuing a fine after a rubbish truck appeared to deliberately destroy her son’s basketball hoop.

Melbourne mum Renee claims she was fined $2,000 by Casey City Council after reporting the truck driver for crashing into the hoop, which was chained to a lamppost on the council’s nature strip outside her home.

Renee’s son received the basketball hoop as a birthday present, but last month the family filmed their garbage collector backing into it several times.

“She’s done it three times and it seems intentional,” Renee told 3AW radio host Jacqui Felgate on Tuesday.

“The last time she did it, it broke. I called the municipality and reported the incident.

“They were quite apologetic, but two weeks later we were fined ($2,000) and instructed that it had to be removed. We have some pretty unhappy kids.”

Renee refused to pay the initial infringement notice because the basketball hoop gives her children, and several others on their street, a fun outdoor activity.

“Every kid on the street is playing with it – they’re not sitting inside on their iPads, they’re playing outside on a safe field,” she said.

However, a second notice and instruction has now been sent to remove the hoop.

“I don’t think it’s an obstacle because it lines up with the light pole,” Renee said.

‘If there had been a car, she (the truck driver) would have hit the car. It’s just hateful.’

Renee said she has not received a response to her emails to the council.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Casey City Council for comment.
