Mail Sport understands that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS will make the final decision on Greenwood’s future.
A source told The Sun: ‘His team-mates would not be opposed to him returning to Old Trafford.
‘They know all about the background and understand how controversial it would be to have him back. Their decision is a football decision, pure and simple.
‘United have struggled to score goals this season and they need a player like Mason.
‘They see him scoring and scoring goals for Getafe every week.’ said the source.
In an interview last month, new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe hinted that the possibility of Greenwood’s return had not been completely ruled out.
Asked whether a new decision would be made about Greenwood, Ratcliffe said last month: “Yes, absolutely. We will make a decision and we will justify it.
‘He is a Manchester United footballer, so we are responsible for the football.’
Nevertheless, his potential return could cause internal strife, particularly among the women’s team, which is reportedly against the idea.
