Popular BBC crime drama ‘is axed after just one series’ following shocking affair between the two lead stars
The BBC has reportedly canceled crime drama Better after just one series.
The five-part TV show aired in February last year and followed a corrupt police detective who tries to get out from under the thumb of a powerful criminal.
The series received mixed reviews and decent viewing figures, but it has been reported that the BBC has decided to pull the plug.
Speak with The sun‘, a TV insider said: ‘Better was doing brisk business, averaging nearly four million viewers per episode, and there was an appetite to learn more about the tangled lives of McHugh and Slack.
‘But the BBC is keen to release a raft of new programmes, which unfortunately means some popular dramas will have to make way.’

The show made headlines last year for all the wrong reasons after it emerged that its two leads were having an affair.
The off-screen drama overshadowed the series itself after 45-year-old star Andrew Buchan romanced Leila Farzad, 42, leaves his wife of 11 years, Amy Nuttall, ‘heartbroken’.
It is said that Amy, 41, discovered her husband was having an affair when he bought racy lingerie in a size that wasn’t hers, leaving her so ‘crushed’ she cried almost every day.
Andrew left his wife for Leila, and when she spoke to MailOnline about the split in February 2023, Amy fought back tears and confessed: ‘I can’t talk about it. I’m sorry, I can’t say anything.’
A source said at the time: ‘It was a huge shock. Amy is heartbroken. Andrew walking away from his family was a huge shock to us all – and Amy is heartbroken. Everyone who knew them thought they would be together forever.
‘But he packed his bags and left with his new co-star. Whatever happened, it seems to have been enough for him to reevaluate his entire life and tear their marriage apart.
‘No one is quite sure of the exact details, but Andrew has clearly had his head turned quite dramatically.’
However, just weeks later, Leila returned to her husband James Maizels, and Andrew returned to his family, with The Sun reporting that Andrew told a friend: “We’re healing.”

Speculation that the couple had reunited came the previous month, when Andrew left their family home in June with his gold wedding ring.
Amy was seen in the property without her ring around the same time, but insiders suggested they would give it another try.
A source close to the couple told The Sun: ‘Amy was understandably devastated when she heard of the infidelity and wanted a clean break and a fresh start.
‘But Andrew came back to her and promised he would change. They have come to terms with their issues and are trying to put the love triangle behind them for the sake of their family.”
The couple was originally thought to split after Amy reportedly demanded a divorce from Andrew in March 2023, just weeks after news of their split emerged, but her wishes then changed.
As Amy took Andrew back, she gave him a list of strict demands to help them rebuild their marriage.
She apparently demanded weekly date nights as they took the 777 approach, full access to each other’s phones and absolutely no non-work contact with co-stars, according to The Sun.

However, Amy eventually called time on their relationship for good and threw him out of the family home they shared with their two children (pictured together in 2017) in August.
It was reported that Andrew also had to keep in touch via FaceTime when he was at work.

A source said The sun at the time: ‘It took a lot for Amy to give marriage another chance, but she thought it was worth the last roll of the dice.
‘There is no evidence that he has cheated again, but as far as she is concerned it is true. She is clearly upset, but also accepts that their time together has come to an end.”
Leila married her husband James in 2013 and they have a daughter who was born in 2014.
