Man United fans will hold a ‘protest’ at Sunday’s clash with Liverpool by wearing yellow… with supporters furious at club’s plan to move season ticket holders from their seats

  • Manchester United supporters will stage a ‘silent protest’ against the club
  • Next season the club will move fans to make room for youth players
  • I’m looking forward to Man United on Sunday… something has to happen for Jurgen’s juggernaut – It’s all a kick-off podcast

Manchester United supporters will protest against the club’s planned seat changes by wearing yellow garments during Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool.

Matchday fans at Old Trafford are furious after United announced that a number of season ticket holders would have to swap their seats next season to make way for academy players.

The club argued that the change is necessary because a side view is ‘optimal for their development and future performance’ when referring to why academy players would be given a new allotted season at the stadium.

The decision has angered spectators, who are likely to be affected by the change in seating arrangements in the club’s oldest stand, which is considered to have the best seats on site.

Supporter groups have now announced they will form a ‘united fan movement’ against the proposed plans.

The SouthStandUtd have posted an update on their planned actions at the 77,000-seat stadium where United host Liverpool on Sunday, encouraging fans to wear a yellow garment during the match.

Other groups – most notably the Man United Supporters Group – have backed the decision, with part of the published statement reading: ‘Manchester United is ready for a touch of yellow this Sunday as a united fan movement takes a stand against the club’s controversial seat reallocation policy . .

‘The influential online movement SouthStandUtd has received support from major fan groups calling on fans to wear a yellow item during the FA Cup match against Liverpool.

‘The silent protest, which can be seen during a match broadcast live to a global audience of potentially 1 billion people, aims to send a strong message to the club’s hierarchy.

Fueled by anger about the forced relocation of loyal season ticket holders, the protest transcends individual groups. It is a united front against a policy that is perceived as discriminatory and coercive towards the very fans who represent the heart and soul of the club.’

A letter from the club's chief operating officer, Collette Roche, has explained the reasons, although it has done little to quell unrest among United supporters.

The group previously described the explanation for the supporters’ movement for youth players as ‘beyond parody’.

United’s chief operating officer Collette Roche previously explained the decision further in a letter seen by Mail Sport, which said: ‘Another issue we face is the location of the seats allocated to our academy and to the players of the women’s team.

‘We believe, especially for our younger players, that having a side view of the action is optimal for their development and future performance, and that it is also important that they are close to the suite they have access to.

‘It is also important that these tickets are placed together with adequate supervision, given the increasing profile of many of our younger and female team players.’
