St. John’s knocks off Seton Hall 91-72 in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals… as the Red Storm roll on and the Pirates’ March Madness hopes could be in jeopardy

The matches played at Madison Square Garden during this tournament often have the character of title fights – with an intense environment befitting the world’s largest boxing venue.

That title fight was perhaps especially true of this matchup – the true embodiment of “survive and advance.” On Thursday, St. John’s and Seton Hall fully entered the bubble for March Madness. A win in this game would earn them a spot in the Big Dance. If they lost, they would likely stay home next week.

This price battle was particularly interesting. On the one hand, newcomer Shaheen Holloway was in only his second season in the Big East. His opposite was a name long known to fans of this conference: Rick Pitino. Sure, he was in his first season at St. John’s, but his 19 combined seasons of coaching in this conference made him a seasoned pro.

Experience defeated youth on Thursday as Pitino’s Red Storm defeated the Pirates of Seton Hall 91-72. They play UConn tomorrow afternoon in the semifinals of the Big East Tournament.

Six St. John’s players had double-digit points, led by RJ Luis Jr.’s 18 points and nine rebounds.
