Hairy Bikers fans left in tears following ’emotional’ final episode with late Dave Myers after his death: ‘This show celebrates the joy of living’

Hairy Bikers viewers were left sobbing on Tuesday after watching the “emotional” final episode starring Dave Myers after he died at the age of 66.

Dave announced he was receiving treatment for cancer in May 2022 and courageously kept the public informed of his progress in a series of emotional TV specials.

At the end of last month, the chef passed away with his family and friends by his side, colleague and lifelong friend Si King revealed.

In The Hairy Bikers Go West, viewers saw Dave and co-star Si ride up the west coast to Bristol on a nostalgic and emotional journey.

Fans praised the “bittersweet” program which ended with the late TV star speaking about his hopes for the future and a statement reading: “In loving memory of our friend, Dave Myers. 1957 – 2024.’

Dave said: ‘We come into Bristol and then the world just opens up, you know, there are memories here, lots of memories for both of us.

‘But the great thing is the optimism of looking ahead, especially on the food front. It’s very exciting and very optimistic. We have the best of the past and the best of the future.’

It comes after Dave expressed his joy at riding his motorbike for one final series following his cancer diagnosis, which aired just 24 hours before he died.

‘When I was told I was sick, I never thought I would ride a motorcycle again.’

The footage then cuts to a shot of the friends on a rowboat, when Myers tells King, “being here with you is like a bloody searchlight. It was amazing’.

The episode then shows the couple embracing as King responds, “Yes, I love you.”

They discuss their “fond childhood memories” of the region and Myers recalled: “I once came to Liverpool as a child to stay in a bed and breakfast for a week’s holiday.”

In the episode, Myers says, “It was funny because they took me on the ferry across the Mersey and when I got back, you know, if you keep your school diary, I was always pretentious, so I said Mum and Dad were taking me on a cruise .

‘I said we were going to New Brighton and they burst out laughing, I was really humiliated. Because I thought the ferry to New Brighton was a cruise.’

To which King replied, “It is if you want to go to New Brighton.”

The end of the episode shows a teaser for the next one, with the pair exploring North West Wales.

In the penultimate episode, Myers hauntingly admits, “It’s good to be alive.”

The episode shows King saying, “Great to be back here with my best friend. A year and a half ago we wouldn’t have thought we’d be back on our bikes and roaming around Dave’s backyard, and it’s great that we’re doing that.”

To which Myers responds, “It was glorious and the riding was glorious. What can I say… It just feels so good to be alive.”

Following his diagnosis, Myers took a short break from work before filming his final show with King, in which they travel west across Britain from Scotland to Devon.

He recalled the emotional moment as he gave a health update, saying he and Si were left in tears when he was able to drive again after purchasing a brand new vehicle earlier this year.

King previously said the series, The Hairy Bikers Go West, which airs on BBC Two, would be one they would “always remember”.

A post on The Hairy Bikers Facebook page in June 2023 announced the new series.

It read: ‘BIG day for us! After two years the gang is back together and guess what?

‘We’re starting a new adventure! Filming in Scotland! Love to Dave and Si.”

The show airs weekly and runs until March 19.
