iDrive gives some Microsoft 365 users unlimited cloud storage… sort of
I driveone of our favorites Cloud backup services, have announced the ability to backup and encrypt the Microsoft Office files in your account for $20 per year per user.
Some of you may be scratching your heads: Microsoft’s Office 365 is already integrated with the company’s cloud storage Moloch, Microsoft OneDrive. Well, quite a bit. But by automating AES-256 encrypted backups three times a day, iCloud thinks it can keep your work safe, while freeing you from OneDrive ‘dependency’.
We’ll get straight to the catches, as revealed in the press release: The ‘unlimited cloud storage’ only applies to files backed up from Microsoft 365 Personal accounts, so it’s not intended to serve an entire organization. It also costs $20 per year.
IDrive’s Office 365 backups
There are no surprises in the rest of the offering: keeping snapshots of previous file versions is nothing new, but if IDrive does this three times a day, we’d say it’s about the most robust backup solution you can get, that provides protection against ransomware and the misty world of data recovery software.
What we do like as part of the deal is what IDrive calls “granular restore,” which really just means that if you prefer, you can restore individual missing files instead of an entire backup, which is very could save a lot. of time.
We also can’t fault the logic of creating a ‘Cloud to Cloud backup’, as they call it, although it does come at an additional cost, and having to manage an additional cloud storage service for the privilege sounds like a pain.
Still, it’s not a bad idea if you already have an IDrive and a Microsoft account. You can even add 365 personal backups to your IDrive account instead of creating a new one.
