Halle Bailey reveals why she kept her pregnancy a secret until after she gave birth to her son Halo: ‘I had no obligation to expose him’
Halle Bailey stunned fans when she revealed that she and boyfriend DDG welcomed their son Halo into their family earlier this year.
Now, just over a few months later, the singer and actress opened up about her pregnancy and why she decided to keep it a secret until after his birth in early January.
She did it while on stage receiving the Essence Black Woman In Hollywood Award during the Essence Black Women In Hollywood Awards at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles on Thursday, March 7.
“What has been one of the greatest highlights of my life, and to be honest, one of the greatest challenges, cannot be compared to the greatest joy of my life. And that was becoming a mother to my perfect little angel Halo,” she said in a video that is currently going viral on X (formerly known as Twitter).
She continued, “These lessons, some of them difficult, that I have shared with you today have led me to a place of protection. There was no way I was going to share my world’s greatest joy with anyone.”
Halle Bailey, 23, opened up about her secret pregnancy and why she decided to make her son Halo’s arrival public until after he was born in early January while attending the Essence Black Women In Hollywood Awards in Los Angeles.
Bailey went on to say, “Halo was my gift. He is the greatest blessing, and I had no obligation to expose him, me or my family to those unyielding spotlights,” which drew a rousing ovation of cheers from the live audience.
As an added bonus, her sister and bandmate, Chloe Bailey, was on hand to walk Halle down the red carpet and then help her present the award on stage.
The first-time mom has been dating YouTuber, DDG (born Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr.), 26, since December 2021, and occasionally appears in his videos.
Humbled and grateful, Halle Bailey then took to her Instagram page to reflect on receiving the award.
‘Today I felt like a princess. “It was an honor to receive the Essence Black Woman in Hollywood Award, to be praised by so many women who paved the way for me to be here today, it’s an incredibly special feeling,” she wrote in the caption.
‘Thank you to my sister @chloebailey for presenting this award, I was a crying mess. I’m also so grateful to my siblings @skiwithaneye & @bransonbailey_ for saying such beautiful words about our journey as a family, and how we got here. as well as Rob Marshall, @tlabarbe and @deoncole for their special words about the trip. I am incredibly honored and grateful that today is something I will never forget.”
Chloe, 25, and Halle, both from Mableton, Georgia, first gained recognition as the musical duo Chloe x Hall.
Initially, the sisters played small acting roles before moving from their hometown to Los Angeles in 2012.
“What has been one of the greatest highlights of my life, and to be honest, one of the greatest challenges, cannot be compared to the greatest joy of my life. And that was becoming a mother to my perfect little angel Halo,” she told the audience, referring to the birth of her son
