Multiple government websites including Secret Service and Homeland Security go down for 20 minutes during Biden’ State of the Union before being brought back online

Several US government websites went offline as President Joe Biden delivered his State of the Union address.

Websites for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Secret Service showed screens with technical problems for 20 minutes Thursday evening.

The cause of the disruptions is unknown. According to Search.gov, a search engine run by and for the federal government, the scheduled maintenance was scheduled for Thursday between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

While government agency websites are offline, much of the nation watched Biden’s crucial State of the Union address.

‘Why are a number of government websites offline at the moment? It seems like everyone is distracted by the state of the union so there’s a lot of shady stuff going on right now,” Twitter told John Winters.

User Jonathan Newburg said: ‘Very strange that US government websites are offline during the #StateOfTheUnion speech.’

Biden, 81, is speaking to a national prime-time audience, battling low approval ratings and questions about his fitness for office.

Biden started his speech with a joke before moving on to an attack on his rival for the presidency, Donald Trump.

His goal with his speech is to present himself as an energetic choice worthy of a second term.

Biden said Russian President Vladimir Putin is “on the march, invading Ukraine and sowing chaos across Europe and beyond.” And if anyone in this room thinks Putin will stop at Ukraine, I assure you that will not be the case.”

The government website crash is the latest in a recent series of social media and communications outages.

On Wednesday, the networking platform LinkedIn crashed, causing thousands of users to see an error message on the site.

According to the outrage service Down Detector, the error message appeared around 9 p.m. LinkedIn announced about an hour later that it was “back up and running” and apologized for the outage.

Facebook, Messenger and Instagram were offline for 1.5 hours on Tuesday in the US, Great Britain, parts of Europe, China, Australia and Mexico.

A source within Facebook told DailyMail.com that the company’s internal systems were also faulty, which may have led to the problems.

In February, AT&T suffered a nationwide outage that knocked out 70,000 phones.

The telephone company blamed the network outage on a ‘software update error’.

There was speculation that the issue may have been the result of a cyberattack, but the company said there was “no evidence of malicious activity.”

It remains unclear where the problem originated and despite AT&T’s assessment, both the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI are investigating.
