Police have found the body of a 60-year-old woman in the trunk of a car after police were called for a welfare check.

Officers discovered the body in the vehicle on Parks Street at Evans Head on the New South Wales north coast about 8.10am on Friday.

Police were called to an apartment after concerns were raised about the welfare of one of the residents.

Officers then found the body of the woman, believed to be in her 60s, in the trunk of the car.

According to police sources, the woman had suffered multiple stab wounds.

Officers said the woman was killed inside the unit before her body was later moved and dumped in the trunk of the car parked on the street.

A 39-year-old man has been arrested and taken to Ballina station where he is said to be assisting detectives with their investigation.

The man is considered to be known to the woman.

Officers have established a crime scene and launched an investigation into the incident.
