Ellen Degeneres’ A-list Oscars selfie with Jennifer Lawrence, Brad Pitt, Bradley Cooper and Meryl Streep turns 10 – but is branded ‘the most overrated pop culture moment of all time’
It’s been a decade since Ellen Degeneres sent shockwaves through Twitter, now X, by posting a star-studded selfie during the 2014 Oscars.
The A-list photo had the likes of Meryl Streep, Bradley Cooper, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lawrence, Lupita Nyong’o, Angelina Jolie, Channing Tatum and more squeezed into a single frame.
However, a lot has changed since the decade-old tweet was shared more than two million times in two hours – and broke Twitter in the process.
At the time, Ellen Degeneres still presented her daytime talk show, The Ellen Degeneres show, which was on the screens for the last time in 2022 after 19 years.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie had tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at their French chateau not long before the split, but the couple has since divorced.

But not much has changed for other selfie contestants, with Bradley Cooper still racking up several Academy Award nominations since American Hustle.
In 2024, he received three nominations for Maestro, a film he produced, directed and starred in.
The actor and director isn’t the only star of the iconic film to continue in the Oscar spotlight, with Jennifer Lawrence nabbing a nomination for Joy in 2015.
Despite appearing in a film every year since 2014, the actress has managed to take the time to become a mother as well.
Many were stunned to learn that it had been a whole decade since the internet-breaking selfie, taking to X to express their shock.
‘Time flies! It feels like yesterday when the internet broke. Truly a moment captured in Hollywood history!’
“So while it may not have aged well, the Oscars selfie will always remain one of the cultural cornerstones of the 2010s.”
‘One of Twitter’s biggest days! I’ll never forget how it went viral within minutes and quickly became the most loved selfie within a few hours.’
“I remember when this photo broke Twitter and then mysteriously disappeared,” one person added.
Many flocked to
A shocked user posted a video of Will Ferrell crying into a wine glass to convey their grief in the photo that turned ten. She said the thought made them “sick.”
“It’s crazy that 2014 is 10 years ago and I’m not ready to acknowledge that yet.”
But the star-studded selfie’s hype has apparently worn thin with others, who branded it ‘overrated’ and ‘irrelevant’.
“This is an iconic photo, but most people can’t even name more than five people in this photo.”
“The most overrated pop culture moment of all time,” another joked: “‘infamous’ not a soul remembers that to this day.”
“If it had been clicked today, it wouldn’t have become popular. All these people seem so irrelevant in our lives.”
“Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep are the only ones I care about in this shot.”
Since the selfie Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt divorced, Jennifer Lawrence became a mother and Ellen Degeneres stopped hosting her hit daytime television show
