Investors will be encouraged to commit more money to women-led start-ups under government-backed schemes.

Female founders receive just 2 percent of all venture capital in Britain – a statistic that has remained stubbornly low.

The government is working with a business taskforce chaired by Anne Boden, founder of Starling Bank, to tackle the gender gap.

It is understood the task force will provide voluntary targets for investment firms to meet, which will seek to drive more money into women-founded organizations.

Research is planned into why men receive the most funding.

Venture capital is one of the main ways entrepreneurs can raise money for start-up companies. They generally support ideas that they consider high growth.
