Kerang house fire: Grim discovery of dead body inside home destroyed by blaze as cops suspect an arson attack

Firefighters made the grim discovery of a body in a property in what police said was an arson attack.

The grim discovery was made after firefighters were called to a fire in the northern Victorian town of Kerang just after midnight on Saturday.

Although the fire in the Lilac Avenue building was extinguished, the only resident inside could not be saved.

A crime scene has been cordoned off and police are investigating the circumstances of the fire.

“Unfortunately, a body was found inside the property after the fire was extinguished,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

Officers from the Arson and Explosives Squad and a specialist arson chemist were called to the scene.

Police are calling on anyone who may have information about the incident to come forward.

Detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad and a specialist arson chemist will assess the site on Saturday morning.

Police are calling on anyone with relevant information about the incident to come forward while the investigation is ongoing.
