Who is Wendy Williams?

Wendy Williams rose to fame in part because of her no-holds-barred approach to her life, which included sharing personal details about her health, plastic surgery and cocaine addiction — the subject of her 2003 memoir, Wendy’s Got the Heat.

She moved to television after a successful career as a radio host, known for her sharp take on gossip and criticizing celebrities, including a controversial 2003 interview with Whitney Houston.

In 2022, Wendy’s self-titled daytime talk show ended due to her ongoing health issues. Sherri Shepherd, who filled in for Williams as guest host, got her own show.

Wendy said in 2018 that years earlier she had been diagnosed with Graves’ disease, which leads to the overproduction of thyroid hormones and can cause a variety of symptoms and affect overall health.

What is the controversy surrounding the documentary?

A lawsuit has been filed by a guardian of talk show host Wendy Williams against Lifetime’s parent company, A&E Television Networks.

The guardian, whose name is Sabrina Morrissey, filed the lawsuit under seal (protecting the details of the case from the public), according to a report from TMZwho reviewed court documents in the case.

The focal point of the lawsuit, the outlet reported, could be linked to the documentary about the embattled celebrity set to be released next Saturday.

Sabrina has asked the court for a preliminary injunction, the channel reported, indicating that her request could be for a judge to block the channel from airing the TV special.

The judge in the case issued the order to keep the case temporarily closed to the public pending a hearing scheduled for next week.

Despite the worrying portrait in the documentary, Wendy herself is listed as executive producer.

What has Wendy Williams been diagnosed with?

Wendy’s team announced on Thursday that the former radio DJ has been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and aphasia – a condition that affects the way a person communicates.

FTD is a group of conditions that occur when nerve cells in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain are lost, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. FTD can affect behavior, personality, language and movement.

The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration describes FTD as a group of brain disorders caused by degeneration of the frontal and/or temporal lobes of the brain and affecting behavior, language and movement.

Aphasia, a brain disorder that can lead to problems speaking or understanding words, can be a symptom of this. The association describes frontotemporal degeneration as “an inevitable decline in function,” with an average life expectancy of seven to 13 years after the onset of symptoms.

FTD usually occurs in people in their 40s, 50s and early 60s. It can affect a person’s personality and lead to loss of inhibition or inappropriate behavior. It is sometimes confused with depression or bipolar disorder, and it can take years to diagnose.

There are no treatments to slow or stop the disease, but some interventions can help manage symptoms.

Why was Wendy Williams appointed legal guardian?

Wendy’s diagnosis came in 2023, but a year before that, in early 2022, Wells Fargo froze her bank accounts and denied her access to her money and assets.

The bank claimed to the court that it was unduly influenced and was a victim of financial exploitation.

This resulted in a New York judge appointing a guardian in May 2023 to manage Wendy’s life and finances.

Her relatives say they do not know what prompted the legal action, and the guardian’s identity was not immediately disclosed, while documents related to their appointment are sealed.

Wendy’s son, Kevin Hunter Jr. – who she shares with her ex-husband, Kevin Hunter – is suspected of stealing some of her money in the documentary, although he denies this on camera.

“I never took (money) without her permission,” he says in the film, although Wendy’s sister Wanda claims he is still financially supported by his mother.
