Gabby Douglas to miss first meet in eight years after positive Covid test
Gabby Douglas’ return to competition will have to wait.
The 2012 Olympic gymnastics champion withdrew from this weekend’s Winter Cup in Louisville, Kentucky, after posting on social media that she had tested positive for Covid-19.
Douglas, 28, planned to compete in three of the four events of the Winter Cup, her first meeting since the 2016 Olympics when she helped the Americans win team gold.
Douglas, who trains in Texas, posted on Instagram that she was “crushed” by the development but vowed to return soon.
The Winter Cup is the first major event for American gymnasts hoping to make this summer’s Olympic team.
While Douglas is away, reigning Olympic champion Suni Lee will compete on beam and uneven bars. The competition is her first since the 2023 U.S. Championships. Lee, 20, has been battling health issues that have limited her training for the better part of a year.
Other competitors in Louisville include former NCAA champion Trinity Thomas and two-time world championship gold medalist Skye Blakely.
