Young man is rushed to hospital after being run down while changing tyre in Adelaide
An Adelaide man is in a critical condition in hospital after he was hit by an SUV while changing a tire on the side of the Port River Expressway.
The pedestrian, a 23-year-old man from Taperoo, was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital after being struck by a silver Toyota RAV4 about 3.50pm on Sunday.
He was in a serious condition.
The driver, a 71-year-old man from Enfield, was not physically injured but was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for mandatory tests.
It is understood the 23-year-old had stopped in a stop lane 300 meters west of Hanson Rd to change a tire on his gray Subaru Forester 4WD.
The 71-year-old driver then hit him from behind before stopping.
Witness Ryan Spoolder, 29, rushed to the scene to help his girlfriend after her car was hit from behind by another vehicle that had slowed to view the crash.
“When I got here, there were at least a dozen people standing there to help him,” he told the newspaper Adelaide Advertiser.
His girlfriend Ebony Vertigan, 27, said paramedics used a yellow tarp to shield the 23-year-old from prying eyes.
“It at least gave it some privacy so people couldn’t look at it,” she said.
