All three eastbound lanes are closed as tow trucks remove vehicles from the scene and drivers pass through the emergency lane.
Westbound traffic has reopened, but city traffic remains bumper-to-bumper 10 miles to Edmondson Park, in the southwest part of the city.
Motorists have been advised to use Henry Lawson Drive, Milperra Road and The River Road to rejoin the M5.
Meanwhile, several vehicles have been involved in a crash on the M4 at Greystanes.
One westbound lane is closed and traffic conditions are heavy.
More to come.
