Oscars 2024 teaser: Barbie-themed clip sees host Jimmy Kimmel called ‘middle-aged Ken,’ Ryan Gosling eating In-N-Out and mention of Gerwig snub

Jimmy Kimmel stars in the first Oscar 2024 teaser clip shared Tuesday morning.

Movies’ biggest night is approaching: the 96th Academy Awards will be held at the Dolby Theater on Sunday, March 10, 2024.

The host was seen in a tuxedo as he got lost in Barbieland, where he was asked if he was “middle-aged Ken.”

He is then shown by Weird Barbie – played by SNL veteran Kate McKinnon – how to get to Oscarland via a fake but colorful car.

The nominees for Best Film are shown along the way. When Emma Stone from Poor Things appears in character, she is referred to as an even “Weirder Barbie.”

The jokes don’t stop there and there are several fun cameos.

Also on the road is Matt Damon in character from Oppenheimer.

Kimmel – who has been having a fake feud with Matt for years – asks who that ‘disgusting’ person is.

The car then serves and hits Damon’s character and fake blood is applied to the image of him.

Once at the Oscars, America Ferrera pops out of the trunk of the car and gives her the famous “It’s hard to be a woman” speech, but instead the theme is “It’s hard to be an Oscar presenter to be’.

Kimmel mistakenly thinks that it is harder to be an Oscar presenter than it is to be a woman, which confuses the women.

Ryan Gosling was also seen as Ken, who is adorably dippy. He says it’s a Tik Tok trend to get In-N-Out before the Oscars while holding a bag and drinking.

Kimmel says the Oscar winners get the fast food after they win.

Ken then says he has no chance of winning so he doesn’t care, and he knows Barbie director Greta Gerwig will win.

Then he has to hear through whispers from America that she wasn’t even nominated.

Everyone lets out a big shout.

The women stop, but the men keep shouting, and then you hear Helen Mirren’s voice saying that men never really grew up.

The clip was both funny, star-studded and also self-referential with its mention of Gerwig.

Fans of the Barbie movie were furious when star Margot Robbie and director Gerwig were snubbed.

Kimmel is an Oscars pro.

This is the fourth time the late-night comedian has hosted the ceremony, having previously taken on the task in 2017, 2018 and 2023.

The TV host, who also hosted the Primetime Emmy Awards in 2012, 2016 and 2020, increased viewership “to nearly 19 million” from 16.6 million the year before, when Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall and Amy Schumer presented, according to the New York newspaper New York. Time.

In 2021, when the show had no host, its viewership dropped to its lowest of all time, with just 10.4 million viewers.

Before 2018, the “broadcast had never dropped below 32 million.”

Kimmel was onstage during some of the show’s most dramatic incidents, including envelope-gate in 2017, when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were given the wrong results card.

As a result, the pair announced the Best Picture award and La La Land was incorrectly announced as the winner instead of Moonlight.

Kimmel then had to come forward to inform the cast that Moonlight had indeed won, showing the inside of the envelope as proof.

“I knew I was going to screw this up,” Kimmel joked at the time. “I promise I’ll never come back.”

Despite the comment, the star returned as host the following year.

In 2022, after being selected to host the 2023 ceremony, the father of four said that “being invited to host the Oscars for the third time” was “a great honor or a pitfall.”

“Anyway, I’m grateful to the academy for asking me so quickly after all the good people said no,” he mused.

In addition to facing declining viewership, the role became less coveted after comedian Chris Rock was punched onstage by Will Smith during his opening monologue for a joke made at the expense of his estranged wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

Ahead of his most recent appearance at the Oscars, he said The Hollywood Reporter how he would react if someone tried to run on stage to hit him over a joke.

“Well, I measure them up, and if I’m bigger than them, I beat them on TV. And if it’s the Rock, I’ll run,” he mused.

He went on to describe the shocking blow as “disappointing in many ways” as it “knocked down the envelope gate” to the second “biggest f**k-up” ever at the Oscars.

“If you’re going to be part of a f**k-up, it might as well be the biggest f**k-up ever. “Being part of the second biggest fuck-up doesn’t have that much cachet,” he joked.

In 2017, Kimmel surprised fans by revealing that he was only paid $15,000 for his first time as host.

“I think it’s illegal not to pay anything,” Jimmy continued KROQ’s Kevin & Bean. ‘I’m not sure if I should reveal this. But no one told me not to do that. I consider this their fault.’
