Pop superstar to be honoured with Global Icon gong at BRITS Awards and will perform at the ceremony – 35 years after landing first nomination

Kylie Minogue will be honored with the much-sought-after Global Icon gong at next month’s star-studded Brit Awards.

The 55-year-old singer, who will also perform at the event, said she was “extremely happy” to receive the organiser’s highest award, which is “reserved for truly exceptional artists”.

Kylie has sold more than 80 million records worldwide and has won three Brit Awards, first being nominated in 1989.

Following the announcement, she said: “I am beyond thrilled to be honored with the Global Icon Award and to join a roll call of such incredible artists.

‘Britain has always been a home from home, so the British have a very special place in my heart. I have great memories of the awards over the years and I can’t wait to get back on the British stage.”

The singer, who will also perform at the event, said she was “extremely excited” to receive the organiser’s highest award, which is “reserved for truly exceptional artists”.

The BRITs Icon is the highest accolade bestowed by the awards and is reserved for truly exceptional artists, with previous winners including Elton John, Robbie Williams, David Bowie and Taylor Swift.

It comes after Kylie won her first Grammy Award in 18 years, winning best pop dance recording for her 2023 hit single Padam Padam at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles last week.

And she certainly made her excitement known in an ear-popping video uploaded to Instagram.

When an assistant entered Kylie’s dressing room as she was getting ready for the awards ceremony to tell her she is now a “two-time Grammy Award winner,” the Queen of Pop screamed with joy and danced around in her robe.

With almost two decades without a coveted Grammy under her belt, the Loco-Motion hitmaker has her latest hit Padam Padam to thank.

The catchy dance song reached the top 20 in several countries including Australia, Great Britain and America.

This is the sixth time Kylie has been nominated for the prestigious award. In 2004 she won only once for Best Dance Recording for her song Come Into My World.

The Australian singing legend received the news of her win backstage in her dressing room and could be seen jumping and screaming with joy.

The Grammy Awards started with host/songwriter Justin Tranter set the tone at a pre-televised event that presented the day’s first award, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, which went to SZA and Phoebe Bridgers for Ghost in the Machine.

The first of three new categories in 2024, Best Pop Dance Recording, went to Kylie shortly after.

About 80 Grammys will be distributed before the broadcast, in which regional Mexican star Peso Pluma won his first Grammy for his first and only nomination, for Best Música Mexicana Album for his Genesis.

This year’s BRIT Awards are live on ITV on March 2 at 8pm.
