Wicked first trailer sees Ariana Grande transform into Glinda The Good Witch alongside Cynthia Erivo as teaser for upcoming film is released during Super Bowl

Ariana Grande turned into Glinda The Good Witch when she appeared alongside Cynthia Erivo in the first teaser trailer for Wicked on Sunday.

The latest look at the upcoming musical film, which premieres in Britain on November 28, was revealed during the Super Bowl.

Jon M. Chu’s upcoming two-part film adaptation of Broadway’s 2004 musical hit, Ariana, is seen in an all-pink ensemble as Cynthia’s character Elphaba Thropp, The Wicked Witch Of The West, is introduced.

The trailer unfolds before Defying Gravity, the musical’s signature hit, with the arrival of Elphaba raising concerns for Glinda, who finds herself ‘green’.

Elphaba is a young woman, misunderstood for her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power, while Glinda is a popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart.

Wicked follows an unlikely friendship that develops between Elphaba and Glinda, two clashing witches in the magical land of Oz.

In the opening shot, Jeff Goldblum, who plays the Wizard of Oz, is heard saying, “The best way to bring people together is to give them a really good enemy.”

Elphaba then tells Glinda, “Something is taking me over and when it does, bad things happen.”

Glinda comforts Elphaba and says, “Don’t be afraid.”

“I’m not afraid,” she answers, “it’s the wizard who should be afraid of me.”

After meeting The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in the film, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths.

Glinda’s unwavering desire for popularity leads her to be tempted by power, while Elphaba’s determination to stay true to herself and those around her will have unexpected and shocking consequences for her future.

Through their extraordinary adventures in Oz, they will ultimately fulfill their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Elphaba is wrongly cast as an evil witch as she tries to expose the fraudulent, corrupt wizard who rules the land.

It serves as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, exploring the story before Dorothy’s arrival and exploring the past friendship between the characters Elphaba and Glinda.

The rest of the cast includes Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Keala Settle, Bronwyn James, Adam James and Bowen Yang.

Part One will be released in the US on November 27, 2024 and in the UK the following day. Part two will be released on November 26, 2025.

Notably, it was during filming when Grande met her now boyfriend Ethan, 31.

This trailer comes after Ariana’s emotional post about wrapping Wicked, where she met her boyfriend Ethan Slater.

Ethan plays Boq, a resident of Munchkinland, in the upcoming film based on Gregory Maguire’s best-selling novel and the hit Broadway musical adaptation.

“I will never forget a minute of my year with (Glinda),” Ariana wrote on her Instagram Story. ‘Or you. or my Cyn. Permanently and preferably intertwined.’

She continued, “I’m so inexplicably grateful that we were able to add so many soaked lashes to the collection.”

The film’s director, Jon M. Chu, also got a shout-out.

Ariana came under public scrutiny in July when rumors swirled that she was dating her Wicked costar Ethan, just days after news of her split from Dalton broke.

To further raise eyebrows, Ethan had recently ended his marriage to Lilly Jay, his high school sweetheart.

They had welcomed their first baby together in August 2022 and he filed for divorce from her in July 2023.

“Thank you, Jon, for leading the way with such compassion, openness, brilliance and kindness,” she concluded. ‘I’ve never seen anyone decorate a room the way you do. I love you so much.’
