JOANNE HEGARTY: THE CHIC LIST – Who wants to dress like a murderous drug baron’s other half, while breathing new life into the fur industry?
- With a brand new season upon us, here’s what I’ll and won’t be doing this spring
First of all, I’m not going to dress like a mafia wife – or anyone else’s wife, come to that. How strange is it that this micro trend of looking like a gangster in 2024 has captivated both the young and old of TikTok. I mean, who wants to look like the other half of a murderous drug lord?
At least if you want to go the route of wearing animal prints, heavy gold jewelry, shiny leather pants, perfectly coiffed hair and a huge fur coat – and revive the fur industry at the same time – then call yourself the head honcho, not just the wife of one.
That said, I might be tempted by a leopard print jacket, although I would wear it best – with a black turtleneck and black trousers underneath.
One of my little pleasures is watching social media footage while waiting for a takeaway coffee or sitting in a taxi, exhausted and tired. I love the sheer variety of things that appear on my screen.
Blazer, Massimo Dutti, turtleneck, Arket, trousers, Toteme, belt, Celine, bag, Jil Sander
But, oh my lord, the comments people leave are terrible. What’s wrong with them? When a couple is renovating their house, viewers line up to tell them it’s terrible.
Or if someone shares a funny slice of life with their children, they will receive nasty judgments about their parenting skills. People’s appearance, style and careers are being destroyed and torn apart. There are no boundaries. What happens to the human race?
So this spring I’m going to try to turn off my phone – well, just for a moment – get dressed and see more theater. With so many great acting names now treading the West End boards – from Sarah Jessica Parker Plaza Suite Unpleasant Successionwith Sarah Snook Dorian Gray’s photo – there is so much to see.
‘Flowers? For spring? Groundbreaking!’ There is a good reason why this line originated The devil wears Prada is constantly quoted and, as expected, the latest collections continue to stick to the usual abundance of flowers.
If you’ve been reading this column for a while, you know that I’m not the biggest fan of flowers. However, there is something about the rose – the one flower that manages to stand out from the rest of the bouquet – that has seduced even me.
From prints of full-on versions featuring long stems with leaves, thorns and all, to (even better) 3D creations, roses have been absolutely everywhere on the runways and awards season red carpets.
For inspiration, look to Simone Rocha’s new playful and modern approach to the rose – or Margot Robbie in her Balmain dress at the recent Critics Choice Awards.
Push the envelope
When it comes to evening wear, nothing is more stylish than a clutch. This season the sleek envelope design returns and we couldn’t be happier. Although large enough to house a strict selection of essentials – phone, lipstick and keys – the neat nails are sleek in shape.
