Young basketballer Jade McKenney, 13, battles for life in an induced coma after shocking car accident as sporting friends rally around her
A young basketball player continues to fight for her life after a horrific car accident as her sports community stands behind her.
Jade McKenney was left in a critical condition when the silver hatchback she and another occupant were traveling in collided with a tree along McMillans Road, near the intersection of Charles Eaton Drive, in Jingili on January 12.
The 13-year-old was flown from Darwin to Adelaide with her mother Bridgette, where she is in an induced coma.
Jade McKenney, 13, was put into a medically induced coma after the car she was driving crashed into a tree on January 12.
Her father flew to join the couple on the next available flight.
While Jade continues to receive specialized medical care, Darwin’s basketball community continues to show its support.
The McKenney family are well known at Ansett Basketball Club, with the young athlete representing the association in both the Girls Under 14s and Under 16s divisions during the 2023 Championship season.
A GoFundMe set up by family friend Jillian Malseed has since raised more than $36,139 to help cover ongoing medical costs.
“Although (Jade’s) condition remains critical, her fighting spirit shines through every day,” Ms Malseed wrote.
‘Her medical team are closely monitoring her progress and are doing everything they can to support her recovery. However, it is too early to determine the full extent of her injuries.”
The family has been a constant source of strength, comfort and inspiration, she added.
“Jade’s parents, brother and family have given their all during this challenging time and navigated the complexities of her medical journey. Their unwavering love and dedication is truly remarkable,” the fundraiser said.
