San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy admitted he did impersonations during games this week to show his teammates he remains calm under pressure.

Purdy’s confession comes after he did an impression of SpongeBob SquarePants’ smile during Super Bowl LVIII Opening Night.

Purdy did it from Mr. Irrelevant, as the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, until playing in the Super Bowl in his second professional season.

During that rise from third-string quarterback to legitimate NFL starter, the 24-year-old, who dipped into his Nickelodeon lore, could have helped the 49ers become one of the league’s best teams.

“SpongeBob SquarePants” debuted on Nickelodeon five months before Purdy was born in 1999.

“Growing up, my dad was pretty good with impersonations,” Purdy said Wednesday. “And so I think I picked up from him. Whether it was family, friends or teammates growing up, I feel like I always did some impersonations.”

“I don’t know, I do it sometimes when we’re in a group or something, just to show them, ‘Okay, brother. He’s calm, he’s cool and collected here. He’s joking. So it’s all good,” Purdy continued.

“So I feel like there are times and moments where I do it, but I don’t try to impersonate everyone all the time,” Purdy added.

Purdy was able to get an impression of the beloved animated children’s character in the middle of Allegiant Stadium during Super Bowl LVIII against the Chiefs.

If San Francisco wins the Super Bowl, Purdy would become the fourth Mr. Becoming irrelevant who does this. He would be the first quarterback picked with the final NFL Draft selection to win a championship.
