England’s 2023 Ashes series was steeped in controversy – and now Australian cricket legend Adam Gilchrist has reignited the banter with a very cheeky social media post.

Gilchrist unveiled a new t-shirt on Instagram this week with a bespoke message guaranteed to irritate English cricket fans.

The shirt bore the words ‘moral victory’, with the ‘moral’ crossed out and the ‘I’ in victory replaced by an image of the famous Ashes urn.

In the caption of his post, the legendary wicketkeeper-batsman tagged former England skipper Michael Vaughan and told him that ‘your T-shirt is on its way’.

This message is, of course, in response to England’s controversial speech about a ‘moral victory’ during the 2023 Ashes series.

“We dominated the game last week, didn’t we?” England batsman Harry Brook infamously commented after the fourth Test in Manchester.

“So if the game had been played out, I think we would have won it. So if we can win (the fifth Test), it can almost be a moral victory.”

British television personality Piers Morgan also took to social media after the last Ashes Test, launching a host of barbs, including the claim that England won ‘the moral Ashes’.

Gilchrist’s T-shirt angered many English cricket fans, who were apparently still annoyed with the way the series was going.

“No one denies that Australia deserved to win the Lord’s Test. Maybe you should get a ‘saved by the rain’ T-shirt instead,” one user replied.

“I signed the series and would have lost it if the rain in Manchester hadn’t saved you, but that’s for sure. Go away,” wrote another.

Australian cricketers have poked fun at the ‘moral victory’ comment on Seven Cricket’s show The Grade Cricketer.

When asked how difficult it was to realize that they had morally lost the Ashes series, Mitch Marsh joked: ‘I think anytime you lose an Ashes series 5-0 it’s always hard to accept.

‘Because England are the best team to ever play Test cricket, 5-0 was probably fair.’

Captain Pat Cummins added: “It was a morale blow. Yes, you can’t come back from it.

“So yeah, it’s something we’ll work on in the nets one way or another. Get some philosophy books or something.’
