Family makes horrifying discovery underneath their baby’s cot: ‘Could have gone pear-shaped very quickly’

A family was left petrified after finding one of the world’s deadliest snakes curled up just inches away from their baby’s crib.

Craig Williams was called to a home in the Hunter Region of NSW on Tuesday where a red-bellied black snake was found hiding in a Raymond Terrace home on Tuesday.

The snake is the 10th deadliest in Australia and is highly venomous.

Mr Williams works with Tilligerry Reptile Relocation Services and came to remove the snake as quickly as possible and quickly get back into the bush.

Mr Williams said he was shocked at how big the snake was.

“It wasn’t even small, it was quite big, so it could have gone pear-shaped very quickly,” he said 7News.

He said that while it is not typical for these types of snakes to venture indoors, the snake may have been looking for a cool place to sleep due to the recent warm weather.

“Recently I’ve had five, six, maybe even more snakes removed from houses, under lounges, under beds,” Mr Williams said.

The snake catcher added that with all the new infrastructure in the region, it was also likely that the snake had been displaced from its original habitat.

Mr Williams urged anyone who sees a red-bellied black snake to avoid it at all costs to prevent something going ‘fatally wrong’.

He said the best course of action was to call a licensed snake catcher and then monitor the reptile from a distance until help arrives.
