Harry Maguire can’t save his Man United career, says Jamie Carragher

Harry Maguire looks like a ‘horrified rabbit’ who must cut his losses at Manchester United and make a fresh start in his career, according to Jamie Carragher.

The 29-year-old was one of England’s star players during their run to the European Championship final last year, but is in a slump for both club and country.

He was booed by English fans at Wembley when his name was read ahead of Monday night’s Nations League meeting with Germany.

And former England and Liverpool defender Carragher wondered if Maguire has the mental determination and fighting spirit to continue to weather the storm.

My question to Maguire is this: ‘Do you still have that same anger in you?’ Carragher wrote in his Daily Telegraph column.

“Too often it seems like the weight of the world rests on his shoulders, like he’s more of a startled rabbit than the authoritative central defender he was.

“I think it’s too late at club level. I wrote last year that he was fighting for his career at Manchester United.

He needs this to be his last season at Old Trafford and start over.

‘Now it’s England’s problem. When I saw Maguire in the last two games, I felt sorry for him. But that is not a good sight for any athlete.

“Sympathy won’t put him back where he was two years ago.”

While Maguire has secured Southgate’s support and will almost certainly be in the Qatar squad, he faces the prospect of falling short of the World Cup in match practice.

With Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez forming an effective central defensive partnership and United win their four consecutive league games, Maguire is unlikely to regain his spot anytime soon.

Carragher added: “Criticism of his performance against Germany is justified and justified and Southgate must assess whether Maguire is mentally fit for a World Cup, able to show that he can put all problems behind him.
