Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has suggested Erik ten Hag should drive to Marcus Rashford’s house to solve his problems.

Rashford missed United’s FA Cup win over Newport just over a week ago after calling in sick for training just hours after being spotted at a nightclub in Belfast, in a different country to Carrington’s training ground.

The 26-year-old has been the center of attention at the club ever since, scoring against Wolves in his side’s 4-3 win last week when he returned to action.

United manager Ten Hag repeatedly refused to address the situation in the media, but claimed the matter has now been closed after dealing with the ‘internal matter’.

However, Yorke suggested there could be something deeper going on for Rashford, and his manager would have to take matters into his own hands to find out what that is.

“I don’t condone what he did,” Yorke told Sky Sports. “I think he came out and apologized for that. I feel that, in fact, I know, Marcus Rashford is the best player at Manchester United Football Club.

‘You can’t let your best players go off the wall like that, that doesn’t happen. There’s a reason behind it, I think it’s the manager’s duty to find out what the reason is, to have that one-on-one conversation about why his star man is doing what he’s doing.

‘There’s more going on. There may be more to it that we don’t know. Yes, the media speculate, and yes, he was in Belfast and did what he did when he shouldn’t have. I don’t condone that for a moment, not at all.

‘But there must be a route somewhere that you have to get to the bottom of. And if I were Ten Hag, I would drive to his house. I will have this conversation one on one in front of him. In front of him, mother or his agent, I will have all these conversations.

‘I would drive to his house because I know how important he is to my success, to the success of Manchester United. He is a key figure.’

Ten Hag had stated that the official reason for Rashford’s absence was due to ‘illness’, claiming that Rashford had gone on a ’12-hour tequila bender’ and then angered several of his teammates after being absent was at training.

When asked about his decision to start the England man against Wolves, Ten Hag said: ‘I didn’t select him on Sunday, he took responsibility, so the matter is closed. He was then asked if he had anything to prove, adding: “Case closed, we’re moving on.”

However, it is not the first time that he has let Ten Hag down. The forward will be sidelined for an away match at Wolves in 2022 after missing a team meeting due to oversleeping.
