Elementary school principal is forced to resign after his double-life as a drag queen sparked fury among parents
The principal of an Oklahoma elementary school who has performed as a drag queen in the past has resigned after intense backlash.
Dr. Shane Murnan, 52, was named principal of John Glenn Elementary School in June, but his controversial past, including child pornography charges that were later dropped nearly two decades ago, came to light.
He reportedly performed as a drag queen named Shantel Mandalay and read storybooks to children at local libraries while in costume.
Western Heights School District had received threats and was forced to hire additional security and instruct Murnan to work largely off-site before being placed on administrative leave.
He resigned this week after months of outrage from his parents Fox News digital. Ryan Walters, the Oklahoma State Superintendent who called on Murnan to resign, celebrated the news on social media.

Murnan was first linked to the drag queen activities in September through the social media account Libs of TikTok.
It then emerged that he faced child pornography charges almost twenty years ago, which were later dropped.
The judge dismissed the case during the preliminary hearing for lack of probable cause because it could not be proven that the images depicted minors.
“The drag queen is at Western Heights. I’ve demanded it from day one,” said Oklahoma State Superintendent Walters.
‘This is not what parents want for their children. The problems at Western Heights persist.
‘What’s going on with their recruitment policy? It is not tolerated here in Oklahoma to have drag queens in class.”
The school district previously said it was aware of the previous charges but defended the hiring, highlighting the individual’s qualifications and excellent reputation.
‘Dr. Murnan has been serving the education field for more than 25 years and has an excellent reputation,” the report said.
“He comes highly recommended by previous supervisors, colleagues and faculty.”
“He holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, a Masters of Education in Educational Administration and a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership and Administration,” it added.

Murnan worked as a drag queen at a venue called “The Boom,” according to a Facebook page.

He also reportedly visited libraries and read books to children dressed in drag. Murnan read children’s books during a story hour at the Metropolitan Library System in June.
“By day she’s an assistant principal molding young minds, but by night she’s the life of the party,” said a Facebook post announcing Murnan’s participation in the 2023 Pride Benefit Gala.

According to Murnan’s biography, he has an “impressive array of titles,” including Miss Gay Oklahoma America and Miss Gay Oklahoma USA.
Walters previously argued that the decision to hire Murnan was part of a broader agenda by the left to influence children’s beliefs and dissolve family units.
“Their end goal is to absolutely destroy a child’s mind, destroy the classroom, destroy the family, and you see the results that come from that.”
“They want children to turn against their parents and only listen to their left-wing ideology,” he added.
Walters said the choice was part of the left’s “scheme” to control student values.
‘And how do you do that?’ he said. ‘You begin…. break them apart and say, listen, you’re gender fluid. Listen, you can change your pronouns…. Look at the sexual material. “If the child brings it home and their parents are furious about it, the children turn on their parents.”

Walters claimed the agenda turns children away from their parents’ beliefs.
“This is absolutely trying to break down that family unit so that the child becomes more susceptible to the most radical Marxist gender ideology we’ve ever seen, pitting groups of people against each other. And frankly, it’s to create Democratic voters.”
‘No parent wants to send their children to school knowing that they could be exposed to this radical gender theory in any way. This woke war against our children must stop. We won’t allow it in Oklahoma. This is the liberal madness that every parent wants out of the classroom,” Walters added.
“We will not allow our children to be part of their radical left game to push ideology and further their end goal of creating social justice warriors instead of students who understand how education can provide them with a path to success. We won’t allow it. This will stop.’
