Toddler twins found dead in car parked on Miami highway

MIAMI– The three-year-old twins died after being found unconscious in a car parked along Interstate 95 in Miami on Friday. The female driver was seriously injured when she jumped from an overpass as police arrived, authorities said.

The investigation had stalled traffic north of downtown Miami and delayed commuter trains.

Miami-Dade County police said 911 calls were received around 2 a.m. about the boy and girl, who were in the backseat of a car parked at the Golden Glades Interchange where I-95 meets the Florida Turnpike. It is one of the busiest traffic points in South Florida. Passersby tried to perform CPR.

When officers and firefighters arrived, the woman jumped from the overpass onto the train tracks far below. Officers found the children, who were taken to hospital and pronounced dead. No information has been released about a possible cause. The woman was also taken to hospital, where police said she was listed in critical condition.

The police say they cannot yet say anything about the relationship between the woman and the children. No names have been released.

“At this time, our investigators are working to piece together this tragic incident,” Detective Andre Martin told reporters.
