Former Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman has described former New England head coach Bill Belichick as “socially awkward” and told a hilarious story about their trip to New York to appear on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.”
During the final episode of his ‘Games with names’ podcast, Edelman embarked on a private jet ride with his legendary former coach as the pair were both set to appear on the bench following their 2017 Super Bowl victory.
New England had just completed their historic 34-28 comeback victory Super Bowl LI against the Atlanta Falcons, and were on a media tour to celebrate.
“He was fun,” Edelman said. “I mean, you know Bill, that’s the only time you can trust Bill to laugh and have fun. I’m sure he’ll be at the (NFL) draft five days later.
‘He’s a nice guy. We had some great conversations. Immediately after the Super Bowl we took a plane to New York together.’

Fox Sports host Charissa Thompson was a guest on the podcast and asked Edelman if there was any “weird awkwardness in conversations” during the trip.
“Sure, there’s always awkwardness with Bill,” Edelman said. “He’s socially awkward, but in a cool way: ‘Ahh, that’s my socially awkward friend.’
Edelman even said that at one point during “The Tonight Show” appearance, Belichick grabbed his hand after the WR made a joke about his coach being “a big meditator.”
“I could probably say that right now…I gotta get Bill on this damn couch (as a guest on his podcast).”

Edelman went on to say that he would be upset if Belichick appeared on Pat McAfee’s show before sitting down for an episode of his podcast.
“I swear if he does McAfee before he does my show it would hurt me,” he said, before joking, “I didn’t take all those team-friendly deals for nothing.”
Edelman spent all 11 seasons of his NFL career under Belichick in New England.
During that time, he recorded 620 receptions, 6,822 receiving yards and 36 touchdowns.
