The recognized director teases a “more focused” experience rather than a “big sprawling” one
Obsidian Entertainment’s upcoming fantasy role-playing game Granted will be released later this year, and director Carrie Patel has spoken more about what players can expect from the experience.
In a new interview with PCGamesNPatel admitted that “in 2024 it is difficult to escape any comparison Skyrim if you’re making a first-person fantasy action RPG,” but clarified that Granted is more comparable in scope and world structure to Obsidian’s 2019 RPG, The outside worlds.
“For us, it’s about a more focused experience, something that feels a little more curated. We can be a little more intentional,” she explained.
That was confirmed earlier Granted will not be an open world game, but will consist of several open zones whose size is comparable to The outside worlds‘larger areas. Speaking about this in the interview, Patel added that the zones are “certainly not small, but certainly more limited than a huge map that you can walk from start to finish in a matter of hours.” However, this allows the developers to “be a little more intentional” in what they create.
“I think there’s a need for games that are big, sprawling RPGs with a lot of openness, but also games that are more composed, but also still retain these elements of choice, character building and progression,” Patel said. “I’m very curious about what we as a studio can do to mix these elements.”
This was confirmed during this month’s Xbox Developer_Direct Granted is scheduled for release on PC and Xbox Series|S at some point this fall, although no specific release month was announced at the time. However, if this is the case, Avowed will be playable via Xbox Game Pass on day one.
