Bungie will push Destiny to be more episodic to avoid becoming ‘predictable’
Lot 2 developers commented on the state of the game as well as plans to change up the sometimes boring first-person shooter during a developer roundtable.
Lot 2 Developer Bungie recently held a roundtable discussion in which team members discussed the future of the multiplayer shooter, ending with a promise to make it more episodic and less seasonal (via PC gamer).
“Creating a framework for how content should be created makes it easier to produce that content quickly because everyone is on the same page,” says senior narrative designer Nikko Stevens. “But it can also be predictable because everyone is on the same page.” However, design lead Brian Frank did talk about how these “frameworks” are often a “survival skill” for developers who are constantly faced with the hard deadlines normally found in a live service game.
Lot 2 has relied on the same style of seasonal content since its release in 2017. Many of the seasons, such as The Witch Queen And Light, consistently marketed themselves as earth-shattering in-universe events. If every season is the chance to stop a villainous threat, the scripted sense of danger can feel decidedly less dangerous.
To prevent future content from falling into this predictable story, the developers agreed that changing from a seasonal to an episodic structure would allow them to surprise players with a more vibrant story.
“We’re working on some things right now that we can’t explicitly share,” said one developer, “but that means we need to change the structure so we can pleasantly surprise you more often in the future.” Hopefully this marks a new start for Lot 2‘s story, which introduces a more exciting story for everyone to enjoy.
