Paul Scholes has savaged Manchester United’s midfielders after another poor showing in a 2-1 loss against Brighton.
The Red Devils were outplayed by Graham Potter’s side in their Premier League season opener at Old Trafford on Sunday.
And legendary former United midfielder Scholes posted on social media, seemingly criticising the much-maligned pair Scott McTominay and Fred.

The pair struggled in their Premier League opener as they lost 2-1 against Brighton on Sunday
He said on Instagram: ‘Thoughts for the week ‘MDF’ it’s all about body shape when receiving the ball, too many times facing their own goal and can only play one way…
‘Get on the ‘half turn’ for f*** sake and bring your more talented players into the game… have a great week everyone,’ followed by a thumbs-up emoji and the words ‘Red Army’.
His former team-mate, fellow Red Devils icon and pundit Gary Neville, quickly took to Twitter to joke: And over on Instagram Scholesey has snapped,’ followed by a cry-laughing emoji.
Speaking as a pundit, legendary former midfielder Scholes (above) called the pair ‘shambolic’
Working as a pundit, Scholes had fumed at half-time: ‘It was a shocking start and the first half was shambolic really. The signs were there right from the first few minutes that this was going to be bad. The quality in the middle of the pitch was really poor, nowhere near good enough but we’ve seen that for the last few years with these two.
‘With Fred and McTominay… even one of them is probably too many. Fred gives the ball away all the time and McTominay’s trying to run with the ball constantly and then gives it away. Pass it to your best players! It’s not that difficult. It’s criminal on a day like today.’
Former United captain Roy Keane, who also played in central midfield, pointed the finger at McTominay and Fred, claiming the midfield duo would never be ‘good enough’ to get ‘United back competing at the top’.
Frenkie de Jong is still Manchester United’s primary midfield target under manager Ten Hag
Keane was furious with the result after the game and blamed United’s lack of quality in the middle of the park for their devastating loss.
The Sky Sports pundit said: ‘The (lack of) decision-making and football intelligence from midfield, particularly Fred.
‘I’ve been going on about it for a long time – Fred and (Scott) McTominay are not good enough. They won’t get Manchester United back competing at the top. We see it week in, week out. They’re not up to it.’
