The 35-year-old has returned to the Mexican club until the end of the season. He was a free agent after recovering from a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament injury last June with MLS club LA Galaxy.
“Chicharito is back home!”, the Liga MX team confirmed on Wednesday.
‘ChivaBrothers, it’s official! Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández returns to the team of his amores for the Clausura 2024.
“We are confident that his love for the institution, the experience he has gained during his successful career and the leadership that characterizes him will be reflected in this new phase at Chivas.”

“My home, my family, my team, my everything,” he posted on social media, along with a video confirming his move. ‘See you soon!’
Chicharito left Guadalajara to join Man United in 2010. As part of the agreement, United played a friendly match in July to open the new Chivas Stadium and Hernandez played for both sides. He scored the first goal in the ground.
He went on to score 59 goals in 157 games for United, where he also won two Premier League titles.
Sir Alex Ferguson, who signed the Mexican for United 14 years ago, sent a good luck message to his former player on United’s account on X.
‘Chicharito! It’s your old boss here,” Ferguson said. ‘First of all, I would like to congratulate you on your return to your old club in Mexico.
‘Where it all started. Where I found you, signed you… and you were a great and fantastic player for us.
‘You’ve had a great career. I think if you return to your old club now, you have the opportunity to add your experience and give your experience to all the players there.
“So, greetings to your family. Have fun – and more goals to come! All the best.’

Hernandez responded to Ferguson’s post on his own X account. “Boss, there are no words to describe how much you mean to me. Being able to say I was one of your players is one of my greatest achievements. THANK YOU! And to my other family
‘Thank you for letting me be part of your history. Will love you forever. Once red, always red.’
Hernandez, 35, left MLS club LA Galaxy in November after his contract expired and he had not played for the team since suffering an ACL injury in June last year.
He scored 39 goals in 82 appearances in the MLS for LA Galaxy over four seasons and earned an All-Star Award in 2022 for his performances.
Hernández also had spells at Real Madrid, Sevilla, West Ham and Bayer Leverkusen.
He is the all-time top scorer for the Mexican national men’s team, scoring 52 goals in 109 appearances. But he hasn’t played for El Tri since 2019.
Chivas, Liga MX’s second most successful side, finished fifth in the 2023 Apertura regular season before being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the subsequent play-offs.
