Frank Lampard opens up on hilarious ‘no but seriously’ memes, with the Chelsea legend claiming ‘he can’t help’ switching from joking to being stern during interviews

Frank Lampard has claimed he ‘can’t help’ switching between joking and being serious during interviews, as the Chelsea legend opens up about hilarious ‘no but serious’ memes.

The 45-year-old previously went viral during his post-match interviews, with the former Derby, Everton and Chelsea manager often seen laughing before quickly switching to a sterner look.

Lampard has subsequently become the subject of a series of online memes and has opened up about his comments on the Stick to football podcast, brought to you by Sky bet.

It also featured as an Easter egg in the Football Manager 2023 video game, where players could select an answer during a press conference where they answered a question positively, before saying ‘no but seriously’ and adding a stricter answer.

During the podcast, Lampard was quizzed by Jamie Carragher on whether he knew he was aware he was making the funny expressions.

“Can I ask you one thing?” said the former Liverpool defender. “You have to be aware when you’re leading and when you’re doing interviews and doing that thing where you laugh and then you get serious?”

Lampard: ‘Yes, I saw it. My daughter has sent it to me a lot.”

The pair sat around a breakfast table next to Jill Scott, Roy Keane, Gary Neville and Ian Wright, who were all hysterical. Wright added, “I love it!”

But it seems Neville hadn’t seen the hilarious memes before, with the ex-Man United defender appearing to say to Carragher: ‘What?’

Carragher replied: ‘You’ve never heard of that?’ But Marcel said: ‘No?’

“You’re going to look for it now!” Lampard replied.

Lampard began his managerial career at Derby in 2018, before being appointed boss of his former Club Chelsea a year later. He was subsequently sacked from his position at the west London club, taking a break from football before joining Everton.

Despite helping the Blues avoid relegation in the 2021/22 season, he would be sacked from his position by the club, before returning to the caretaker role at Chelsea in 2023 following the departure of Graham Potter.

‘Do you know when you do it? Or are you thinking about it?’ Carragher asked the former Chelsea player, who replied: ‘No, I’ve tried to stop it now.

He made a serious face before saying, “No, I have!” My daughter sent it to me ages ago. It was a meme, or whatever they call it. But now that I’ve seen it, I can’t unsee it. But I’ve done a few press conferences where I’ve done it and you’re like, “oh damn, I just did that.”

“You know what I mean, I can’t help it!”

In 2023, Lampard was reappointed as Chelsea’s agent. The Daily Starhad reportedly retired his iconic expression less than an hour after his return.

“I am very grateful to those (the fans) who are delighted (with his reappointment),” he said with a smile during his first press conference at the club. His attitude then took a slightly different turn, saying, “If there are some who are not elated, they can know that I will do my utmost (to succeed).”

Adam Hurrey of The Athletic highlighted his hilarious expressions in 2014: posting a fantastic thread showing this many of Lampard’s joke-to-serious expressions.

Speaking about the comments, Hurrey wrote on X (formerly Twitter) in 2014: ‘Lampard is absurdly consistent. Even his interviews are always the same: serious point, lighthearted point (chuckle) but no, serious point.”
