Windows 10 is getting a new weather widget on the lock screen and bug fixes in a new update
Microsoft has released a new preview update (KB5034203), which brings an updated lock screen weather widget to Windows 10 in addition to regular bug fixes. The update also brings changes to comply with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, but these changes will be rolled out gradually rather than all at once.
The update brings more life to the weather experience on Windows 10, including more interactive weather updates, allowing you to hover your cursor over the widget on your lock screen to see more information about current weather conditions in your region. Clicking on the weather card will sign you in to your device and open Microsoft Edge with a full weather broadcast.
In addition to the updated widget, updated KB5034203 comes with other fixes, such as addressing issues affecting BitLocker’s data encryption, the failure of some apps in Windows 10 to respond to keyboard language changes, and a fix for an annoying bug that caused the shortcut of Internet Explorer became unresponsive for some users.
Optional, but still worth an update
Regarding compliance with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, Microsoft has released a blog post addressed to Windows Insiders in November, discussing plans to ensure Windows 11 and Windows 10 meet their stated obligations.
The Digital Markets Act includes a wide range of requirements that Microsoft will have to adhere to within the EU, in particular the ability for users to each Windows app, including Cortana and Edge. According to the blog post, Microsoft will “update PCs running Windows 10, version 22H2 and Windows 11, version 23H2 in the EEA to become compliant by March 6, 2024.”
So we can expect more of these small-scale updates for both Windows 10 and Windows 11 in the coming months. I’m glad to see Microsoft continuing its efforts to keep Windows 10 up to date, as many people are still hesitant to move on from to go aboard. to Windows 11.
KB5034203 is currently an optional preview update, so you’ll have to install it manually if you want to try out these features for yourself now. Go to the “Update & Security” section of your setting and click the “Windows Update” tab. There you will see a list of optional updates available and a link to download and install the update. To enjoy!
