Sheffield United host West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday and it is a match with a lot of history.

The game is called the ‘Carlos Tevez derby’ and it all dates back to the 2006/07 season.

The Hammers shocked English football when they signed both Tevez and his compatriot Mascherano.

They still looked destined for relegation before experiencing a stunning late recovery inspired by Tevez in the final two months of the season.

West Ham’s revival came at the expense of Sheffield United, which was relegated that season.

The London club went on to achieve multiple top-half finishes, while the Blades only returned to the Premier League in 2019.

Sheffield United believe they have been cheated by the controversial signings of Tevez and Mascherano.

Tevez’s surprise arrival at Upton Park alongside Javier Mascherano in August 2006 was said to be a breach of Premier League rules on player ownership by third parties.

West Ham were fined £5.5 million for the breach but crucially were spared a points deduction, a ruling that put them on a collision course with Sheffield United.
