Hundreds of Bills fans turn up with shovels as team puts out another $20-an-hour SOS call to help clear snow at Highmark Stadium before Sunday’s game against Kansas City Chiefs

The Buffalo Bills put out a call for snow shovelers to report to Highmark Stadium in the New York suburb of Orchard Park on Friday afternoon.

The Bills will host the Kansas City Chiefs in an AFC divisional playoff game Sunday night, days after a second round of snow moved through the area this week.

Due to a snowstorm last weekend, the NFL and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul agreed to move Sunday’s scheduled wild-card game against the Pittsburgh Steelers to Monday, and work crews were called in to help get the stadium ready then too to make.

A total of 16.5 inches of snow has fallen in Orchard Park since last weekend, including 21 inches from Tuesday through Thursday, Buffalo television station WIVB reported.

The Bills asked people willing to work to put on their warmest winter clothes and bring their shovels to help clear the stadium, especially the seating area, starting Friday at 2:00 PM ET.

No snow is expected during the Chiefs-Bills game, which is set to start at 6:30 p.m. ET, according to information provided to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle by AccuWeather.

The weather forecast calls for a daytime maximum temperature of 26 degrees under cloudy skies, with temperatures dropping to 18 degrees and winds gusting up to 20 miles per hour at night.

The wind will make the air temperature feel between 10 and 15 degrees, senior meteorologist Tim Kines told the newspaper.

“Considering what they went through in the last game and what it could be in January, this is a pretty quiet weather cycle,” Kines said.

Earlier this week, Bills head coach Sean McDermott told reporters there was a plan in place for dealing with practices interrupted by weather delays.

“We’ve prioritized the safety of the players and everyone else here as best we can, and it’s just phenomenal work from everyone working so hard to clear the roads,” he said after Friday’s community turnout .

Earlier this week, a travel advisory was in effect for Erie County, potentially preventing Bills players from driving to practice, but quarterback Josh Allen said he had no problem showing up in his car on Wednesday.

That doesn’t mean the 27-year-old two-time Pro Bowler doesn’t have a backup plan with his neighbor, who goes by “Squirrel.”

“No, not a Squirrel yet,” he said, referring to Dave “Squirrel” Winter, a retired farmer, who Allen has dug out in the past. “But I’m sure this will happen in the coming days,” he added, before asking how long the storm could last.

Informed that the snow could continue to fall throughout the weekend, Allen shrugged and said, “Yeah, Buffalo weather. We’ll figure it out.’
