Ara: History Untold tells the player that they have already lost, because accidentally holding on to a losing game is ‘bad’
Oxide Games’ upcoming turn-based grand strategy game Ara: Untold History is now in a release window and fans have been given a behind-the-scenes look at its development.
Revealed during the Xbox Developer_Direct, Ara: Untold History will release on PC via Steam and PC Game Pass in Fall 2024. Generally, fall game releases point to a launch sometime between September and November, but Oxide Games hasn’t revealed the details yet.
Furthermore, at one interview posted on Xbox Wire, Ara: Untold History‘s design director, Michelle Menard, spoke more about the areas of the grand strategy genre that the developers wanted to improve on Ara. One of these is the ‘Act’ system, which splits games into three separate stages that players can only progress through if they have enough ‘Prestige’. This is earned through things like completing quests and making technological advancements. Essentially, this system makes players lose faster, which Menard described as a “kindness.”
βIt’s so hard to play a 20-hour game and realize that at the end of it you’ve lost on hour two,β Menard explained. βSo it’s a kindness to the players. Let them build, lose early and then let them start again. So, fail often, fail early, learn from it, and then keep playing because you know you have to learn from your failure to play these games. There is nothing wrong with that, but let the player know that he has already lost and let him actually lose.β
The first images of MachineGames were also revealed during the Developer_Direct Indiana Jones game. Titled Indiana Jones and the Great Circlethe first-person action adventure will be released later this year Xbox Series|S and PC.
