Residents of a Gold Coast suburb were forced into an emergency lockdown after a man allegedly doused a house with petrol and threatened three people inside.

Police were called to a house on Maudsland Rd in Oxenford on the North Coast at around 1.30am on Friday morning after reports a man was making threats and pouring petrol through a house on the street.

An emergency was soon declared under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) due to the odor of fumes and the possibility of fire, causing neighboring homes to be sealed off.

A 31-year-old Maudsland was arrested shortly afterwards and the PSPA was disbanded at around 1.50am.

He has been charged with malicious damage and threatening violence and will appear at Southport Magistrates Court on Friday.

Three people who were in the building at the time were not physically injured.
