Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024 – live coverage from the Galaxy S24 launch event

Of course, Samsung will have to bring its A-game to AI if it wants to compete with the AI-focused Pixel phones. But now that a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will be at the heart of the Galaxy S24 Ultra, and perhaps other Galaxy S24 models as well, the phone should have the hardware to power built-in AI tools.

For the Galaxy S24 series, generative AI will almost certainly deliver Samsung’s own take on Google’s Magic Editor. But given the rumors that the Galaxy S24 could detect the tone of text messages, I suspect there’s more to the phone’s AI than just image manipulation.

Expect text translation, summaries and data extraction as a bare minimum.

“What the heck is generative AI?” I imagine you’re asking. Well, it’s when artificial intelligence algorithms are used to create something new instead of feeding existing data or figuring out whether it’s a dog or a cat in a photo.

ChatGPT is an example of generative AI. While the smart technology in Google’s Pixel 8 and its Magic Editor is another. Tech geeks call it revolutionary, while others tend to think it could be a useful tool at best, or worse, a mess.

So I’d bet a small fortune (if I had one) on this Unpacked being very smartphone-centric, while the official unveiling of the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus, and Galaxy S24 Ultra takes place.

What looks like iterative upgrades apparently comes with a slew of generative AI features.
