Kevin Malligan: How young dad killed in Bali moped crash saved the lives of four Aussies with brave decision – as his pregnant wife reveals their heartbreaking final texts

The grieving wife of a young father who died after falling from a moped in Bali has revealed their heartbreaking final conversation – and how he saved four lives after his death.

Kevin Malligan, 24, suffered serious head and neck injuries after falling from a moped his mate was riding on December 29 while they were on holiday. His wife Leah is due to give birth in a few weeks.

The injuries were deemed irreversible and he was declared brain dead by doctors after being transferred to Australia, forcing his family to cut off his life support last week..

Mrs Malligan told Daily Mail Australia her loving husband was able to donate his heart, liver and both kidneys, “saving the lives of four different people”.

She revealed that her last conversation with Mr Malligan took place just before the accident, where she wished him a good night before going to bed and texted him ‘I love you’.

“Good night Bub, I love you more,” read his final response.

Ms Malligan said the family will find out on Wednesday or Thursday whether the procedures to remove his organs were successful.

The wait for procedures has further delayed Mr Malligan’s funeral as his family waits for his body to be released by the coroner.

“We hope to have a funeral within two weeks. We don’t have a specific time or day yet,” Ms Malligan told Daily Mail Australia.

Mr Malligan was robbed of the chance to meet his second child with his wife, who is expected to give birth sometime in February.

The devastated widow remembered him as a “wonderful father, husband and friend” with a generous and loving nature who “will be missed by everyone.”

“He was always up for a joke and would do anything to put a smile on someone’s face.”

Above all, she said, Mr Malligan was a devoted father who enjoyed spending time with his daughter Ivy.

“There was nothing more precious than seeing how excited he was when he came home to give his Ivy girl a big hug,” Mrs Malligan said.

‘Then they played constantly until it was time for dinner and bedtime. He loved her so much and she doesn’t love anyone else as much as Kev.”

Mr Malligan’s grieving family began a GoFundMe page that had raised more than $123,000 as of Friday. They announced Friday that his life support had been turned off.

“Our last hours with our son-in-law Kevin were this morning as we all said goodbye,” wrote Mr Malligan’s mother-in-law, Jodie French.

“We had to go through a traumatic time that no woman, father, mother, father or family should have to go through.

“We are forever grateful for so much support over the past two weeks from family, friends, colleagues, the community and complete strangers.”

The fundraising page helped pay for Mr Malligan’s $150,000 medivac from Bali to Sydney and all other medical bills.

His family were forced to pay out of pocket after Ms Malligan could not find travel insurance to cover scooter accidents in Bali.

Mr Malligan was riding on the back of a moped his friend was driving when the pair “hit a bump” and he was thrown, Ms Malligan told Daily Mail Australia.

She said her husband wasn’t doing anything stupid or drinking when the accident happened.
