Massive queue to inspect a house in Melbourne exposes grim reality of trying to buy a home in Australia

The grim reality of Australia’s frenzied property market has been thrust into the spotlight after a single photo showed a queue of buyers waiting to inspect a home.

The photo, shared on Reddit on Saturday, showed a long line of buyers waiting to view a property on Cheeseman Street, in the Melbourne suburb of Croydon.

The line to inspect the three-bedroom house started at the front door and snaked down the driveway, down the street and around the block.

Potential buyers were unimpressed, with one claiming the huge turnout was a result of the price being advertised much lower than the actual figure.

The property was listed by Jellis Craig Ringwood for $880,000 to $920,000 and will be auctioned on February 3.

“Jellis Craig Ringwood wasted everyone’s Saturday afternoon,” the potential buyer wrote.

They claimed the price was $300,000 less than what the house could actually sell for, while Domain estimates the final sale could be as high as $1.21 million.

“There needs to be a special hell for these s****y REAs (real estate agents),” the buyer wrote.

Daily Mail Australia contacted Jellis Craig for comment.

One person joked that the number of people inspecting the property would wear out the floor of the house.

The three-bedroom home is located on an 836 m² block and has three different living areas, two bathrooms and four parking spaces.

‘Quietly secluded in an idyllic leafy neighbourhood, this expansive single-storey home showcases striking external and internal design features with high exposed beam ceilings,’ the listing says.

‘Immaculately presented and flooded with natural light, the home features three generous separate living areas for harmonious family living.’

According to data from Realestate.com.au, between January and December 2023, the average price for a home sold in Croydon was $885,045.

In the past 12 months, 278 homes were sold, with more than 5,600 buyers looking for a home in the Melbourne suburb.

According to SQM Research, December 2023 witnessed a notable decline of 5.2 percent in the national housing supply.

The total supply was 234,194 homes, a contrast with the 247,062 in the previous month.

Australians are increasingly struggling to get a roof over their heads due to rising property prices and declining availability.

Some have resorted to drastic measures to live out of their cars or caravans, while tent cities have sprung up across the country.
