Aitana Bonmati was named FIFA’s best women’s player for her stunning performances with both Barcelona and Spain over the past 12 months.

The 25-year-old midfielder has already won the Ballon d’Or Feminin, the Golden Ball of the Women’s World Cup, UEFA Player of the Year and Champions League Player of the Season in recent months.

She was the favorite choice ahead of national teammate Jenni Hermoso and Colombian star Linda Caicedo, who were also shortlisted.

The trio were among the best performers at last year’s Women’s World Cup, which took place in both Australia and New Zealand, with Spain beating England in the final.

Bonmati played a starring role for Spain by scoring two goals on their way to World Cup success last year, while also helping Barcelona secure the Women’s Treble in the league, Spanish Cup and Champions League.

Each nominee boasted strong credentials for the individual award, which was presented at an awards ceremony in London on Monday evening, bringing together the world’s best football talents under one roof.

Hermoso was Bonmati’s closest rival on the three-player shortlist after being voted in for the crown after a stellar 12 months.

The 33-year-old also played an influential role in guiding Spain to the Women’s World Cup and was also involved in one of the biggest post-tournament stories after she was inappropriately kissed by former Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales.

Hermoso was kissed on the lips by Rubiales, who, after a long period of refusal, eventually resigned from his role as FA president over the kiss that took place on the World Cup trophy stage after the final.

Real Madrid’s Caicedo was the third player to take part in the individual shortlist after an impressive season.

Caicedo was one of the best players at the Women’s World Cup last year
