Calls to oust Alejandro Mayorkas grow: Even skeptical Republicans say Biden's Homeland Security secretary should be held accountable for border disaster
More and more Republicans in the House of Representatives support the idea of impeaching DHS Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas for his handling of the 'crisis' at the southern border.
The support from both hardline conservatives and moderate Republicans comes ahead of the Republican Party's first hearing on the possible impeachment of the Secretary of Homeland Security this week.
It's a good sign for Speaker Mike Johnson, who leads the House with a slim two-seat majority, so Republicans will need almost everyone in their conference to successfully oust Mayorkas.
On Monday, days before Republicans plan to scrutinize his leadership and “inaction” at the border during their confirmation hearing, Mayorkas headed to Eagle Pass, Texas — which in recent days has become the epicenter of the migration crisis.
He heard from border agents on the ground, after weeks of back-and-forth between him and Senate negotiators about a possible border security deal.
But top Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., blasted his visit to Texas — which came just days after more than 60 Republicans made the same trip — as a “desperate photo-op” as the “crisis” rages on.
As Congress returns from holiday recess, Mayorka's impeachment is gaining momentum, along with the spending fight, a major immigration and foreign aid deal still in the works and Joe Biden's impeachment inquiry.
More Republicans in the House of Representatives are backing the idea of impeaching Alejandro Mayorkas ahead of their first hearing on the possible removal of the Homeland Security secretary.
Attorneys generals from Montana, Oklahoma and Missouri are expected to testify Wednesday at the House Homeland Security Committee's impeachment hearing, titled: “Havoc in the Heartland: How Secretary Mayorkas' Failed Leadership Has Impacted the States.”
It is the first impeachment hearing after nearly a year of investigations and reports by the House Homeland Security Committee.
If successful, Mayorkas would be the first Cabinet secretary to be ousted in 150 years.
Representative Anthony D'Esposito, a Republican from a New York district that President Biden won in 2020, told CNN that “we have all been part” of the border crisis.
“From the far right and the Freedom Caucus to the more moderates, we have all been part of this,” he said.
Moderate Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., first predicted to DailyMail.com last week that some Democrats would support removing the secretary.
Meanwhile, Rep. Kat Cammack R-Fla., claimed. on Fox News that Mayorkas had warned Republicans trying to oust him: “You're not going to like who comes next.”
Last month, more than 300,000 migrants attempted to enter the US through the southern border – the largest number ever recorded in a single month.
The city of Eagle Pass, population 28,000, saw days in December when about 5,000 migrants attempted to cross the border with Mexico.
Speaker Mike Johnson and a group of 60 House Republicans visited Eagle Pass, where they railed against the secretary of Homeland Security and urged President Joe Biden to take unilateral action to close the border.
“Secretary Mayorkas is not a good negotiating partner,” Johnson told CBS after the trip when asked about the secretary's resignation at a time of “crisis” numbers at the border.

In November, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., forced a vote to impeach the secretary, but the House voted to refer her articles back to committee.
Instead of the judiciary, the Homeland Security Committee is currently leading this effort.
“My job is to get rid of this guy,” Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green told DailyMail.com. “That's what I'm going to do.”
Green called Mayorkas the “greatest national security threat” to the US
The trips to Eagle Pass come as the battle between the Biden administration and the state of Texas heats up, with the White House asking the Supreme Court to intervene and allow it to tear down the razor wire that Gov. Greg Abbott installed along the southern border. border.
Abbott also installed floating barriers in the Rio Grande, which later failed a legal battle and were removed, and recently signed a new law allowing state law enforcement agencies to arrest and immediately deport migrants.
