Mauricio Pochettino has denied that Financial Fair Play restrictions will put pressure on Chelsea in the January transfer window as they 'look for options or opportunities' to strengthen their squad.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday night's Carabao Cup semi-final first leg away to Middlesbrough, the Chelsea manager insisted they did not need to sell players before bringing in new recruits.

'It's not like that. Look, you know there are too many rumors about things going around in the clubs,” Pochettino said.

'It's not what they (the hierarchy) translate to me. If we want to buy players, there is no need to sell.'

Asked whether Chelsea were likely to sign a new striker this month, the Argentine added: 'We look (in the transfer market) like other teams for options or opportunities.

'But I'm so happy because we have (Armando) Broja. We have several players who can play in the striker positions and we need our attacking players in the second line to help the team score goals and win games.

'I am very positive and happy with the team. If anything comes up, we will report it.”

When asked how the discussions with Chelsea's owners went, he replied: 'Really good. We have a good relationship and I think everything is going very well.

'Conversations, normal conversations that we have to have and if there is something, we say it.'

Chelsea have spent over £1 billion in just three transfer windows since taking over from Todd Boehly.

That includes £115m spent on Moises Caicedo, £106.7m on Enzo Fernandez and £88m on Mykhailo Mudryk.

However, the Blues have tried to balance the books by selling Kai Havertz to Arsenal for £65 million, Mason Mount to Manchester United for £55 million and Mateo Kovacic to Man City for £25 million.

In July last year, Chelsea were fined £8.6 million by UEFA for 'submitting incomplete financial information' during Roman Abramovich's time as owner.

In November, The Guardian reported that Chelsea were facing new questions about how Abramovich financed the club's success, allegedly using a series of secret payments that may have broken FFP rules.
