Tragedy as teen, 17, dies a week after suffering 90% burns when barrel exploded after another teen threw a pan of gasoline on it during a holiday gathering

A teenager died a week ago after suffering burns to 90 percent of her body when a fuel barrel exploded during a holiday gathering.

Madison Lewis, 17, was seriously burned after a boy threw a pan filled with gasoline onto the fire where she was standing with her friends.

“I thought it was a cup at first, but now I found out it was a real pan, full of gasoline in the barrel, and they say it just exploded and just went towards her,” her mother Ericca Hammond said. Fox news.

She added: “It was devastating. She completely burned her whole body.”

The north Texas teen tragically died Sunday morning, her family said.

Madison went into a medically induced coma after the accident and underwent multiple surgeries at Parkland Hospital in Dallas.

Doctors briefly brought the 17-year-old out of the coma to see if she would respond again on January 2.

She made some small movements with her tongue before being put back into the medically induced coma a few days before her death.

An online obituary for the teenager reads: 'Maddy's journey was marked by a steadfast spirit, resilience and courage that inspired all who knew her.

“Despite facing enormous challenges, she faced every obstacle with a determination that left a lasting impact on all who were touched by her grace.

“Her precious body, weary from the hard battle, found comfort when the good Lord called her home.”

Madison, a senior at Jacksboro High School, was supposed to graduate this year and go to college but “gone way too soon,” as one of the tributes on her mother's Facebook page says.

Her sister Niya wrote: “My beautiful sister, there are no words to describe the emptiness I feel now that you are gone. I honestly have no words for it

'I hope you know how much I love you. You were the first to make me a big sister, making me feel a love like no other.”

She added: “You fought, you showed how strong you are. I will always be so proud of you Maddy. I will miss you forever.'

Another commenter states that Mrs. Hammond has already lost one of her children in the past five years, and now Madison.

“I ask that you pray for them and consider making a donation,” the woman added, referring to the fundraiser set up to cover Madison's funeral costs.
