I Am Bread and Surgeon Simulator developer Bossa Games is the latest games company to make major layoffs
A number of employees from Bossa Games, the British game studio behind the Operation simulator games, I am bread and more have recently been hit by layoffs, it is confirmed.
Daniel Nye Griffiths, who led global communications at Bossa Games from early 2023, revealed in a LinkedIn message before the end of the year his team “was closed as part of a significant change in the studio's size and structure.” He noted: “Unfortunately, independent game studios and publishers are particularly vulnerable to the conditions impacting the technology industry.”
He continued: “There are several excellent former Bosses across a range of disciplines – including marketing, but also QA, IT, manufacturing, development, finance and HR – who will also be looking for work in the new year. I would encourage anyone with staffing needs to take a look at this, and I'm very happy to make introductions and recommendations to any recruiters reading this.”
The studio is currently working on the co-op survival adventure, Lost skies, which was announced last May and will be published by Humble Games. Concluding his post, Griffiths wrote: “I would also like to wish everyone at Bossa all the best, and well wishes as they continue to work to Lost skies an amazing experience.”
At the time of writing, it has not yet been publicly confirmed exactly how many staff members have been affected by the redundancies. TRG has contacted Bossa Games for comment and will update this article if we receive a response.
Unfortunately, 2023 was fraught with layoffs within the games industry. Fortnite developer Epic Games announced a massive staff reduction in September 2023 approximately 830 people affected.
There were also numerous layoffs at Embracer Group-owned studios as a result of the company's restructuring program. From the end of September 904 people were affectedbut this number increased by cuts at Fishlabs, New world interactive and more. Free Radical Design, the studio behind the Time splitters series, wash confirmed it will be closed in mid-December.
